Pakistan’s leather industry exports showed a slight decline in value in the first half of the current financial year (July-December), falling by around 0.75% compared to the same period a year earlier.

Between July and December 2014, the industry’s exports had a value of almost $630 million, down from $634 million for the same six months in 2013.

In the first six months of this financial year, tanners exported 11.8 million square-metres of finished leather, which had a value of $248.2 million.

This represents a decline in volume year on year of 14.5%, although the drop in value is much lower at 1.3%, indicating that Pakistani tanners are receiving a higher price per square-metre of finished leather in export markets: $21 per square-metre on average in this financial year compared to just over $18 per square-metre a year earlier.

Exports of leather footwear over the six month period were 6.9 million pairs bringing in revenues of $65 million. This represents growth in volume and in value, of almost 3% and 23.1% respectively. The average export price per pair for leather shoes from Pakistan went up from $7.89 to $9.43.
