State-run leather group in Algeria launches waste-to-fertiliser project

Leather Industry, a state-run company in Algeria, has launched a new project to use tannery waste as a fertiliser. The company will set up a fertiliser production operation in a warehouse in Rouiba that was formerly used by a leathergoods brand, Districh.

Chief executive, Mohand Zouggar, has told local media that production of fertilisers could begin in 2016. He explained that the operation would involve taking around 7,500 tonnes of solid waste per year from five tanneries the company runs, as well as waste from privately owned tanneries that want to take part. He said he hoped to produce around 4,000 tonnes of fertiliser each year.
