At the time of the announcement, at the start of 2015, the government said support would also be available for companies that can add value to by-products from the cattle and buffalo herds, including tanners. The money will come from two special promotion funds: the first specifically for cattle in arid and semi-arid regions of the country and the other a federal programme for building up and developing buffalo herds in Argentina.
Official figures suggest that as much as 75% of Argentina’s land-mass can be classed as arid, semi-arid or lacking in precipitation, with as much as 23% of the total, an area covering 60 million of Argentina’s 260 million hectares are part of a national action plan on desertification.
The government said it wanted to encourage small producers to start farming cattle or livestock in affected regions, improve infrastructure there and make it easier for farmers, tanners and other producers in the livestock value chain in these parts of Argentina to bring their products to the national market.
