Argentina eyes Russia for high-level footwear exports

As in previous years, Argentina’s industry minister, Débora Giorgi, paid a formal visit to the Efica exhibition in Buenos Aires, choosing the last day, January 13, to attend.

National footwear industry association CIC organises Efica twice every year.

On this occasion, CIC president, Alberto Sellaro, said on his encounter with Ms Giorgi that his member companies’ priorities for 2015 were to keep adding value to Argentinean footwear, to make the country’s footwear firms more and more professional, improve design content and develop new materials.

Secretary of the organisation, Horacio Moschetto, said the footwear industry was in for a busy year and he told the minister that new possibilities were opening up in external markets. For example, Mr Moschetto said high-end Argentinean footwear companies could have a good opportunity to build up their export business in Russia at the moment.

Italian, Spanish and Portuguese manufacturers have enjoyed good business among wealthy Russian consumers in recent years, but the market there is currently more difficult for suppliers from these countries owing to restrictions on trade between Russia and the European Union following recent tension between Russia and Ukraine.

On paper at least, this opens up new possibilities for makers of high-quality, high-fashion shoes from other parts of the world and CIC clearly believes Argentina can be one of the countries to benefit.
