COTANCE forges ahead with leather environmental footprint project
13/01/2015
COTANCE has been working to develop Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCRs) for European leather since 2013, securing support from the outset from leather industry leaders around the world because if its efforts to have leather’s green credentials recognised by the European Commission are successful, tanners and users of leather everywhere stand to gain.
A technical secretariat has now produced a first version of a document detailing draft product category rules for leather which, COTANCE hopes, could become “the product rules used by those stakeholders in the sector who are interested in measuring the performance of their products based on the product environmental footprint methodology”.
Members of the technical secretariat will meet in Milan on January 19 to discuss the draft ahead of a wider consultation exercise in Brussels on January 22.
COTANCE has said it welcomes participation from stakeholders across the leather sector and invites interested parties to register to attend the consultation in Brussels, although space is limited and participants will be able to attend on a first-come-first-served basis.
Written responses to the draft document, which can be found at this link, are also welcome, with the window for responses remaining open for the next four weeks.
