Brazilian leather industry celebrates 17% export growth in 2014

Full-year figures show that exports of Brazilian leather, hides and skins brought in revenues of more than $2.9 billion in 2014. This represents growth of 17.4% compared to the figure for 2013.

Commenting on the figures, which came from the country’s ministry of development, industry and overseas trade, the executive president of the Brazilian Tanning Industry Association (CICB), José Fernando Bello, said they represent a “highly positive” performance.

He said he was pleased not only with the numbers, but also because the result suggests to him that efforts the tanning sector has put in place to increase its competitiveness in the international marketplace are working. He said making Brazilian leather high-quality, sustainability, marketing and technological innovation had been the most important areas of focus.

“Our leather is being recognised across the world as a top material,” Mr Bello said.
