Innovation and moderate growth will be the “new normal” for China’s tanners

In comments at the end of December, the president of the China Leather Industry Association, Su Chaoying, said protection of the environment had been the key issue for tanners in China in 2014 and that making leather production cleaner was likely to continue to be an important challenge for them this year.

He said that figures for the first 10 months of 2014, China had registered a “slight drop” in the volume of leather its tanners produced, compared to the same period in 2013. However, he said revenues for tanners were up by 9.7%.

Mr Su added that he believes the way forward for China’s tanning industry is to automate more, run fewer beamhouses and improve management skills in the sector’s companies. He said innovation and moderate growth would become “the new normal” for China’s tanners in 2015.
