Outgoing US ambassador to Bangladesh, Dan Mozena, has said recent developments at the country’s long-awaited new tanning-sector industrial park at Savar, near Dhaka, encouraging and has predicted that more environmentally friendly production will give leather and finished leather product manufacturers in Bangladesh increased access to markets such as the US.

Speaking at the end of November to a delegation of environmental journalists in Bangladesh, Mr Mozena said: “I am encouraged by the work the government and tannery industry are undertaking to build a new tannery park in Savar. Once these new, environment-friendly tanneries come on line, Bangladesh will have access to American and other markets for exporting shoes and finished leather goods.”

Mr Mozena said he believes exoprts of footwear and leathergoods could, in time, just as important to the Bangladeshi economoy as apparel exports.
