Pakistan’s leather industry export revenues for the first four months of the current financial year (July-September 2014) were down by 3.1% compared to the same period in 2013, falling from $429.6 million to $416 million.

Tanners in Pakistan exported less finished leather over the period, shipping 6.7 million square-metres with a value of $161.3 million, representing year-on-year declines of 26% in value and of 4.3% in value.

Footwear firms exported 4.1 million pairs of shoes and boots with leather uppers over the same period, achieving export revenues of $43.5 million. This represents a decline of 14.6% in volume compared to the figure for the same months in 2013, but an increase in value of 19.2%.

The positive news is that tanners this year have increased the value of the finished leather they are exporting from $18.50 per square-metre to $24, while producers of leather footwear have been able to increase the value of their exports from $7.60 per pair this time last year to $10.60 per pair.
