Political rivals unite to request higher chrome limits in Lorca

In mid-November, conservative politician Ana María Aquilino raised the matter before parliament. She pointed out that Lorca has been the home of tanners since the Middle Ages and that the leather industry remains an important source of jobs and wealth in the local economy.
She pointed out, however, that times had been tough in recent years for the 14 tanneries that remain in Lorca and said limits on chrome discharge that were stricter than in other parts of Spain, other countries in Europe and many other places around the world were making it hard for Lorca’s tanners to compete.
She said the regulations in Murcia were stricter than the European Union’s suggested limits and made no distinction between chrome III and chrome VI.
A socialist counterpart, Manuel Soler, said he agreed and pointed out that although employment in Lorca’s tanneries had come down from the days when the sector employed 1,200 local people, it still supported 400 jobs directly.
