Igualada tanners on course to move to new ‘Innovation Park’
Catalonia’s devolved parliament, La Generalitat, has announced that plans for a new ‘Innovation Park’ for tanners and leathergoods manufacturers near Igualada have received initial approval, although it may take up to ten years to complete the project.

Twenty-five tanners operating in Igualada at the moment will move to a brand new site to the north of the town. The site will cover more than 30 hectares, will be close to the leather innovation faculty at a new campus the Igualada Engineering School (EEI) is establishing (see image) and well connected to road networks. The land in question is currently being used for agriculture.

La Generalitat has presented the development as good news for tanners in the area, saying it wants the Innovation Park to house research and testing facilities and logistics and other service providers alongside the tanneries, helping to make leather production in Igualada more competitive.

Next steps include giving local people 45 days to give a response to the plans and a further month for local councils to deliberate. La Generalitat will then respond to any questions raised during the public consultation exercise before publishing a formal report and, all being well, giving the definitive go-ahead to the plans.
