Assocal will call for “a relaunch” of Italian manufacturing

Italian footwear manufacturers’ association Assocalzaturifici (Assocal) has said it supports recent government proposals to reduce labour costs and make manufacturing in Italy more competitive. However, the organisation has claimed government support for the industry needs to go further.

In a statement ahead of Assocal’s annual convention in Florence on November 15, the organisation was critical of a decline in government funding for promotion of exports of goods made in Italy. Assocal president, Cleto Sagripanti, said funding of around €130 million per year to support export promotion had been withdrawn.

“Support for international growth is essential at a time like this, characterised by a difficult situation in the important Russian market, requiring new market openings to recover lost ground,” Mr Sagripanti said. “The proposed legislation marks a break with the past, turning decisively towards the primary goals of growth and work. But there is still a lot to be done to restore complete faith in the economy, and we firmly believe that we need to start by protecting our areas of excellence.”

He added that Assocal would use the Florence event to call for “a relaunch” of manufacturing in Italy.
