JBS Couros may expand energy-saving idea

JBS Couros, the tanning division of Brazilian group JBS, is preparing to roll out an energy-saving idea, pioneered at its wet blue plant at Cacoal, in the state of Rondônia, to other tanneries in its network.

The group found that energy use in the tanning drums at Cacoal was higher than in similar operations at its other tanneries; it has 25 in total, 19 of them in Brazil. Working with a partner, engineering group WEG, the team at Cacoal narrowed the problem down to the motors powering the drums in the plant’s beamhouse.

New up-to-date motors that offer better control of the speed at which the drums rotate and of the energy they consume and JBS Couros’ central energy maintenance team measured a 34% improvement in energy consumption in this part of the Cacoal operation, helping the tannery achieve an overall energy saving of 13%.

JBS Couros sustainability and marketing manager, Fernando Bellese, told leatherbiz: “The project has been tested, brought good results and will be used as a benchmark. Now, there will be an individual assessment in our other plants to verify which ones require the same kind of upgrade.”
