USDA ploughs money into Tasman Leather’s wastewater processor

A council-run facility that processes wastewater from US based tannery Tasman Leather Group has been awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s environmental programme.

Hartland Pollution Control Facility will benefit from $1.2 million in loans and $3.6 million as a grant for upgrades.

“The funding packages may provide a few new jobs, however, it will definitely help preserve the 142 to 145 positions between the town and Tasman Leather Group,” town manager Chris Littlefield told local press.

The upgrades, which include replacing old machinery to make the plant more energy efficient, are expected to be finished by 2018.
