Leather is a bright spot for Algeria

27/10/2014
Amid a general picture of declines in the performance of most industrial sectors in Algeria in the first half of 2014, leather and footwear represented an exception, with growth of 3.2% overall compared to the first six months of last year.

Within this, the North African country’s national statistics office said there had been growth of more than 10% in the value of semi-finished leather production, and in the value of finished leathergoods.

Algeria’s economic growth is heavily dependent on oil, although food production also showed growth in the first half of 2014.

Steel and other metal production (-10.2%), chemicals, rubber and plastics (-6.5%), textiles (-5%), construction materials (-2.6%) and wood (-0.7%) were among important industries that showed a decline.
