Leather Is My Job project reaches conclusion
A project called Leather is My Job, aimed at improving the European tanning industry’s image in the eyes of jobseekers, came to a conclusion at an event in Bucharest on October 23.

COTANCE, the representative body of the leather industry in the European Union (EU), led the project, working jointly with trade union organisation industriAll. The initiative has the support of the European Commission.

The Bucharest event consisted of what COTANCE secretary general, Gustavo Gonzalez-Quijano, called “a very rich debate” on the subject of recruiting a new generation of tannery workers in Europe and of making the tanning sector attractive to young people in Europe today.

“There is more to do here,” Mr Gonzalez-Quijano said at the end. “We have created a special leaflet in seven languages on the industry for distribution in schools and universities, a special website and a digital tool-box. We conducted 97 interviews with tannery workers in seven countries, but we want to add to it.”
