Canada threatens tariffs on cattle and beef if US defies WTO on origin labels

20/10/2014
The World Trade Organization (WTO) has found in favour of Canada and Mexico in a five-year dispute with the US over country-of-origin labelling on live cattle and meat.

US labelling requirements put packer firms and livestock farmers in the two neighbouring countries at a disadvantage, the WTO said on October 20.

In Canada, the government has calculated that the measures, which also apply to pigs, have cost its livestock and meat industry more than $1 billion per year. It has threatened to retaliate by imposing tariffs on livestock, meat and other products imported into Canada from the US.

Two Canadian ministers, Ed Fast (trade) and Gerry Ritz (agriculture) said the US policy was “blatantly protectionist”.
