Mexican packer announces major new processing plant

Mexican meat company SuKarne has announced a plan to build a new processing plant in Lucero in the state of Durango in the north-west of the country.

The new plant will involve an investment of around $600 million, will create 12,000 new jobs and will process 800,000 head of cattle per year. The site, which covers an area of more than 470 hectares, will also contain a feedlot with capacity for 250,000 head of cattle. It will be the biggest meat processing plant in Mexico.

SuKarne is the fifth-biggest packer in North America.
