Small companies are driving export growth in Colombia

More micro-enterprises than big companies are now exporting their products, including leather-sector products, from Colombia.

In a new report, the country’s export promotions agency, Proexport, has said that 18.6% of exporting companies in Colombia in 2013 were micro-businesses, while 16.7% were large companies. The corresponding figures for 2010 were 14.9% and 17.7%.

Proexport president, María Claudia Lacouture, said on launching the report that micro, small and medium enterprises had become “the real driving force behind the growing internationalisation of Colombia’s manufacturing sector”.

Leathergoods and footwear firms were among those showing the strongest growth, she said.
