Turkish tanners call for wet blue export duties

Representatives of the Turkish leather industry have asked the country’s ministry for industry to impose export duties of up to 30% on wet blue hides because tanners in Turkey are short of raw material.

For a long time Turkey has imported wet-salted hides from neighbouring countries to supplement domestic supply. However, with wet blue hides fetching attractive prices on the global market, there has been an increase in the number of hides, including those from cheaper origins in the region, being exported from Turkey at the wet blue stage.
