Argentina: another packer files for bankruptcy protection

18/08/2014
Ongoing problems in the Argentinean meat industry have led to the closure of one of the largest packer plants in the province of Buenos Aires.

Following announcements about a lack of cattle reaching abattoirs in Argentina and a fall in exports, packer Nueva Escocia, located in the town of Luis Guillón, about 25 kilometres from the capital, announced on August 13 that it was closing its doors.

The company, which had been operating in the town for 20 years, said its export clients wanted beef from steers weighing more than 500 kilos and that it was no longer able to source enough animals of this kind. It said weather conditions in north-east Argentina (where floods have followed several years of drought) are partly to blame.

Nueva Escocia’s closure has led to loss of around 300 jobs.
