Marfrig to close down plant in Argentina

08/08/2014
Reports from Argentina say packer and tanning group Marfrig has decided to shut down completely one of the abattoirs it runs in Argentina. The Brazilian company suspended operations at two plants in February, those it owns in Santa Fe and in Cordoba when restrictions in cattle supply and on beef exports made it difficult to continue production. Media in Argentina now say the 350 workers at the plant in Cordoba have been permanently laid off.

In the build-up to announcing its results for the first half of 2014, which it will do on August 13, Marfrig is making no public statements on any aspect of its business, in keeping with Brazilian regulations.

Commentators have said that the economic situation in Argentina, because of unresolved debts, may have made Marfrig rethink its investment plans there.
