It hosted a successful event in Pakistan in June, attracting more than 200 tanners, who heard the environment minister for the province of Punjab, Shuja Khanzada, suggest that it would not be long before only those industries that dispose of their waste in a proper manner will be allowed to continue operating in Pakistan.
Following the event in Pakistan, Stahl took the seminar to India and Bangladesh and has now said it intends to expand the programme to China, Mongolia, Mexico and Scandinavia. In addition, it said it would host follow-up seminars in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh to continue its support of tanners there who want to become more sustainable.
“We believe that it is time for action now to make the entire leather processing chain more sustainable,” said Mike Tomkin, director of sustainability at Stahl, on announcing the expanded seminar programme. “Even taking small steps can improve the situation. The huge attendance, with over 200 visitors per event, shows that the whole chain wants to become more sustainable. We believe that it is our responsibility to accelerate this process.”
Each seminar will be held in the local language to reach as many tanners and other industry representatives as possible.
