Mendoza tanning co-operative wants to expand

Located in the town of Maipú, the Mendoza Tannery Workers’ Co-operative Limited started production in 2007, processing locally sourced bovine hides and goatkskins. National tanning industry association general secretary, Walter Correa, has worked with the co-operative on its expansion plan and attended the meeting at the end of July at which co-operative president, Manuel Valero, presented the plan to the provincial authorities.
As part of the project, the co-operative is seeking assurances from the local authorities that they will give priority to hides and skins from Mendoza being processed locally. Manuel Valero said: “The co-operative has an important role to play, economically and socially. We connect to small producers, and family-run farms; it’s mutually beneficial and we are fomenting development in this region and that’s what regional economic development needs to be about.”
Provincial minister for agriculture, Carlos Casamiquela, said after the meeting that he viewed the initiative as a good way of adding value to local raw materials.
