Beef sales beat chicken and pork for Tyson, but contribute lower profit

Packer and tanning group Tyson has recorded revenues of almost $27.5 billion for the first nine months of its current financial year, which represents a year-on-year increase of almost 8%.

Its operating income on this figure was just over $1.2 billion, up from a figure of $959 million for the first three quarters of its 2013 fiscal year.

Beef accounted for more than 40% of all Tyson sales over the nine-month period, bringing in $11.7 billion, more than pork or chicken. However, beef contributed less operating income than either of its rival meats, with $194 million, or just over 16% of the total, compared to chicken’s 56.8% and pork’s 29.7%.

Tyson attributed beef’s lower contribution to profits to higher fed cattle costs and periods of reduced demand for beef products, which made it difficult to pass along increased input costs.
