National Cattlemen’s Beef Association defends industry against new study

US beef industry experts have denounced as “a gross oversimplification” a newly published study that claims beef is less sustainable to produce than other meats.

The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in July, claims to show that, compared to poultry or pork, beef produces more heat-trapping gases, emits more nitrogen, consumes more water and uses more land.

However, Dr Kim Stackhouse-Lawson, sustainability director at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has reacted by saying the study over-simplifies the complex systems that make up the beef value chain.

She said a year ago that between 2005 and 2011, the beef industry reduced environmental impacts by 7%, reduced emissions to soil by 7%, greenhouse gas emissions by 2%, emissions to water by 10%, occupational accidents and illnesses by 32%, resource consumption by 2%, water use by 3%, land use by 4% and energy use by 2%.
