Tanners in León face land-price increase if they relocate
16/07/2014
The authorities in León have earmarked a number of new sites for tanneries, with good links to the city’s common effluent treatment plant. However, new reports say tanners who are making enquiries about building a new tannery on one of the new sites are experiencing sharp increases in the price of land.
According to local reports, the price of land on one of the new sites, Las Amalias, has doubled in the course of discussions about tannery relocation and now stands at around $150 per square-metre.
President of the León branch of tanning industry association Cicur, Fabián Collazo, has said one of the consequences of this will be that more tanners in the city will work from wet blue only and will contract out wet-end production to partner tanneries that do move.
He said more tanning companies were joining Cicur in preparation for the changes ahead. Estimates put the number of tanneries in León at around 500, although some of them are very small. Mr Collazo said Cicur’s membership in the city of 300 companies has swelled in recent months to 330.
