Skin prices drop by 50%, but it’s still a tough time for Turkish tanners

26/06/2014
Hot summer weather and the imminent start of the holy month of Ramadan (June 28 this year) are already affecting the production capacities of tanneries in Turkey, sources in the country have told leatherbiz.

In better news for tanners, operators in Turkey have said the price of sheepskins for producing double-face has dropped by 50% compared to last year, but that ongoing uncertainty in markets such as Ukraine and Russia is making tanners reluctant to produce.

There are market problems also for garment nappa and shoe-upper tanners in Turkey, not least by ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Commentators have said it will be September now before a clear picture emerges of how the last quarter of 2014 is likely to go for Turkish tanners.
