Prada blamed for Parlanti closure
Reports in Italy say a prestigious artisan shoe manufacturer in Tuscany is closing down. The company concerned, Parlanti, has 38 employees.

A statement from trade unions representing these workers has blamed luxury brand Prada for the closure, alleging that a refusal on Prada’s part to pay “the necessary rates for the company’s survival” had forced Parlanti out of business.

In addition, the statement said the closure of many independent footwear retailers in Italy, who were also Parlanti customers, had played its part. The trade unions have said they hope new owners for the business will come forward to save their members’ jobs.

Parlanti was founded in Monsummano Terme in the province of Pistoia in 1960 by Mario Parlanti and quickly built up a reputation for producing high-quality women’s shoes. In the 1970s, it began to ship product overseas too.

Parlanti described its collections as having “simple good taste, elegance and class”. It was committed to using “top-quality leather” from tanneries around the world.
