Fatal accident at Colombian tannery
29/05/2014
Mr Ramírez was carrying out maintenance on a chemical storage tank during production downtime at the tannery on Sunday, May 25, and came into sufficient contact with chemicals to be overcome.
Three colleagues raised the alarm and rushed to his aid before they too were affected by chemical fumes. The three later recovered in a local hospital, but doctors were unable to revive Mr Ramírez.
His colleagues complained that the emergency services were slow to respond but praised local people in El Cerrito for their help. Quoting eye-witnesses, newspapers in Cali said people living close to the tannery had given first aid to the affected workers and, after waiting in vain for an ambulance to arrive at the scene, used their own transport to take the four tannery workers to hospital.
