Royal Leather vindicated by environmental tribunal in Pakistan
28/05/2014
Royal Leather, which in 2013 won Highly Commended for Asia excluding China in the third programme of the Tannery of the Year Awards, was a pioneer in the Pakistan leather industry in constructing and running an on-site effluent treatment plant at its tannery at Sheikhupura, around 35 kilometres outside Lahore.
The effluent treatment plant has been working since 2006 and the company has allowed rival tanners from all over Pakistan to visit and inspect it, encouraging them to follow its lead.
Upon receiving notice of the complaint, Royal Leather disputed that its operation required any remedial action. When the case went before a tribunal, its decision was that the case be dismissed. The tribunal also directed Punjab’s Environmental Protection Agency to take action against the team in Sheikhupura for failing to register “widespread” pollution in the area from other industrial units while “singling out” Royal Leather “without any scruple of conscience”.
