TFL introduces new chrome-free tanning agent
27/05/2014
It describes the new product as a ready-to-use tanning compound based on special aluminium chemistry, which combines tanning and basifying in a single product. The product is free of aldehydes, chrome and phenols.
“Chromium is by far the most popular tanning agent,” TFL acknowledged at the time of the launch.
The performance characteristics of Tannesco FC make it suitable for a wide range of high-quality, specialty articles, the company said, particularly in the shoe, bag and accessory segments. It can be used in pre-tanning and retanning to obtain leathers with what it described as “excellent tightness and a firm handle”. It is compatible with many mineral and synthetic tanning agents and will be “especially useful” for retanning in combination with vegetable tans, TFL claimed.
When Tannesco FC is used to make nubuck and splits, these articles wil benefit from a short, two-way nap, and strong, brilliant shades can be achieved, it continued, while grain leathers will benefit from “an extremely tight and flat grain”. In addition, as the light-fastness and heat resistance of this alternative tanning agent are good, it can be used in the preparation of snow white and non-yellowing articles.
The company said it was aiming the product at tanners (either small skin tanners or hide tanners splitting in the lime) who are looking for ecological alternatives in the pre-tanning and tanning steps.
