Ministry officials praise improvements in Itauguá tanneries

Two tanneries in and around the city of Itauguá in Paraguay’s Central Department have received the all-clear from government inspectors to resume production following suspension in 2013. A third tannery has been given extra time to construct effluent treatment tanks at the site, while a fourth facility has ceased production.

The authorities suspended production at the four tanneries following complaints of poor environmental management that reports say was affecting a local stream.

“The difference in one year is remarkable,” an environmental ministry official has told local media. “You can tell right away from the smell that things are much better now. Last year, we saw some dead fish in this area and now we have the presence of aquatic birds.”
