Santa Croce tanners want recognition for code of ethics

One of the discussions that took place at the annual general meeting of the Italian tanning industry association (UNIC) on May 8 centred on applying a new quality certificate to leather from Tuscany.

Franco Donati, the president of the tanners’ association in Santa Croce sull’Arno in Tuscany, said at the meeting that he meant no disrespect to existing certification programmes, but added that tanners in Santa Croce need “something extra, something different”.

He explained: “We need something that gives testimony to the quality of our products, something that can be a symbol of all the work that goes into it, not just in terms of creativity and craftsmanship, but which also reflects our environmental policies and our commitment to developing our people. Our code of ethics ought to be transformed into something that adds value in the market.”
