Demand from China means Uruguayan plant is viable again
09/05/2014
Investors from Italy, Venezuela, Chile and China have acquired the Frigorífico Florida plant in the Florida department in southern Uruguay, formerly in Angolan ownership, but not in operation since 2010.
The new investment group, Clademar, has said it hopes to have the plant up and running again in the second half of this year. Initially, it will have a slaughter capacity of 400 head of cattle per day.
Its focus will be on producing high-quality cuts of beef, with 50% of its output destined for export to China, where the same investors are building up contacts in the retail and restaurant sectors, especially in Shanghai.
The new owners have also talked about setting up a partnership with nearby tanning co-operative, El Águila to process the hides the operation produces.
