Brussels asks cattle stakeholders to reach early agreement on environmental boundaries

The European Commission has asked the leather industry’s representative body in the European Union, COTANCE, to accept “an additional condition” before starting work on a pilot project to help determine the environmental footprint of leather.

COTANCE’s project is part of a wider programme and because several projects are linked to cattle production, the Commission has asked for extra preliminary work to come up with a consistent way of measuring the environmental impact of cattle. It has asked the leather industry to share the task of agreeing a set of measures with representatives of the meat, dairy, livestock feed and pet food sectors.

What the Commission wants is for two representatives of each of the five sectors to form a roundtable to carry out this work.

In communicating the news to supporters of the pilot project, COTANCE’s general secretary, Gustavo González Quijano, said: “With this invitation, the Commission is facilitating an early agreement among stakeholders in the cattle value chain regarding system boundaries. We would be well advised to accept it.”

He added that, with the Commission chairing the working group and the participation of an expert group for technical guidance, representatives of the leather industry could “look forward to a fair process”.
