Colombia’s “king of leather” has no tannery plans for now
Bogotá-based leathergoods entrepreneur Mario Hernández is continuing his retail expansion plans, adding to his existing network of around 60 own-brand stores by establishing a first store in Europe, with Moscow as the city of choice.

Until now, the brand’s stores, which sell high-end bags, small leathergoods, apparel and footwear, were all in Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Future openings will take place in prime luxury shopping locations around the world.

However, Mr Hernández has told leatherbiz he has no plans to follow in the footsteps of other luxury brands, including Hermès and Louis Vuitton, and buy a controlling stake or even outright ownership of a tannery to secure supply of high-quality finished leather.

The brand’s founder told leatherbiz: “With our focus on building our own identity and our exclusivity, it would be a very interesting option, but it would need to be a very long-term option, and not something we can do at the moment.”
