Slaughter rates decline in Canada

29/04/2014
Cattle slaughter in Canada declined by 18.7% between 2010 and 2013.

Last year, federally inspected abattoirs across Canada slaughtered a total of almost 2.6 million cattle, compared to 3.2 million in 2010.

Over the same period, the Canadian cattle herd has also declined in size, but to a far lesser extent. On January 1, 2013, Canadian livestock farmers had a combined herd of 12.3 million head. This compares to a herd of close to 12.7 million head on January 1, 2010, a fall of just over 3%.
