London design critic favours “Milan architect” look

London-based design critic Stephen Bayley has revealed that Milan and Florence inform his look more than his home city.

Mr Bayley shot to prominence in the 1980s when working with Terence Conran on a now-famous London exhibition of design called The Boilerhouse Project. However, in the Financial Times’s Power Dressing column, he revealed recently that he likes to have an “architect from Milan” look.

Another Italian city, Florence, also plays an important part in completing the look because it involves Gucci horsebit loafers and a watch “for special occasions” by Panerai, a brand that combines Swiss engineering and Florentine design.

Mr Bayley told the FT that he wears the Panerai watch when he has meetings with Italian billionaires. “They notice,” he said. “With the brown leather strap, it’s quite unusual.”

Panerai offers to personalise the leather straps on its watches.
