Elementis sales hit by chromium plant shutdown

A maintenance shutdown at Elementis' chromium business in the first half of 2013 has hit profits at the chemical maker.

The UK-listed group reported a rise in pretax profit of 2% for the for the year ended December 31 while revenue rose 3% to $776.8 million - below the company's and analysts' expectations.

Its three manufacturing sites in the US produce a liquid chrome sulphate product that is transported to the tanning industry mainly for the domestic market. Several different grades are produced, covering a range of concentrations and basicities.
