Diversification vital for New York leather merchant

The vice-president of sales at New York-based leather merchant Milton Sokol & Co has said the family-run business has stayed profitable by diversifying its product offering in recent years.

It moved into the hospitality sector in 2006 after sourcing shagreen for a baccarat table manufacturer, and it now sells to hotels under the name Demar Leather Co.

"We have to stay relevant," Suzy Kamali Sokol told US publication Cranes.

Demar said the hospitality sector was worth $3 million in sales last year, 15% of Sokol's overall revenue, and is growing at 30% per year.
