Arlei makes statement on Salta tannery

In a brief statement dated February 28, 2014, Argentinean tanning group Arlei has played down a dispute at one of its facilities.

Police were called to the Arlei vegetable-tanning plant at Rosario de Lerma in the province of Salta, in the north-west of Argentina, on February 25. Workers had staged a peaceful protest in support of a dismissed colleague. The police came onto the site to make sure employees could go in and out at the change of shifts and tensions escalated.

Initial talks between representatives of workers and of the management team on February 27 delivered no progress, but messages from inside the company, which also runs a tannery in Las Toscas in Santa Fe province and finishing, warehousing and furniture-manufacturing operations in Buenos Aires, were more positive in the following days.

In its statement, Arlei limited itself to saying: “We wish it to be known that the Arlei plant in Salta is running and operating normally. We are grateful for people’s concern.”
