Argentinean tannery urged to hold talks with workers

Reconciliation talks are to take place between the management team of a tannery in north-west Argentina and representatives of its workforce following a dispute over a dismissed worker.

Police in the town of Rosario de Lerma, in the province of Salta, clashed with workers from the Arlei tannery on February 25. Arlei dismissed one of its workers following a dispute over trade union representation inside the company. His colleagues gathered at the entrance to the facility to show support for him, and the company owners called the police to allow people to go in and out during shift-changes and to make sure production continued uninterrupted.

Some of the workers told local media that the police had tried to remove them forcibly, insisting that this was in spite of the peaceful nature of their protest.

Salta’s provincial government ordered representatives of the Arlei management team and of the workforce to hold a meeting on February 27 to settle their differences.
