Gerber brings new leather-cutting system to market

“We’ve packed our nearly two decades of nesting and leather-cutting expertise into this extremely efficient system and priced it at a fraction of most automated leather cutting systems,” said Gerber’s senior product manager, Tom Gordon, at the time of the launch. “At the core of Taurus II is an extremely powerful computerised nesting engine that has more than one million nesting strategies at its disposal.”
In comments to leatherbiz, the company explained that “nesting strategies” is a reference to “combinations of nesting system variables”, based on customer preferences and requirements and on the type and grade of hide on the cutting table at the time. Other features include the ability to record digitally the details of every hide, including usable area and defect area. Users of the technology can use the information to give feedback to hide suppliers.
Taurus II is available in one- or two-station configurations that enable users to maximise floor space. The system “helps customers improve their profitability by reducing labour and material costs, saving time and helping produce the best-quality product possible,” Tom Gordon said.
Gerber’s global marketing and communications director, Debbie Marconi, added that “impressive results” in terms of yield and efficiency were coming from user organisations that are beta-testing Taurus II, including Wilson Sporting Goods. She said Gerber intended to publish case-studies arising from these tests in the coming months.
