The footwear industry still dominates Portugal’s wider leather sector, but amid positive export figures for 2013 across the piece, leathergoods exports registered particularly impressive growth.

With a value of EUR 113 million, Portuguese leathergoods brought in 39% more in export revenues in 2013 than in the previous year. At the same time, exports of leather from Portuguese tanneries had a value of EUR 88 million last year.

Most of Portugal’s leather goes into the domestic footwear manufacturing sector, which recorded growth of 8% in export revenues last year, reaching EUR 1.7 billion.
