Police close Argentinean tannery over rent dispute

One of the owners of a small tannery in Corrientes, north-east Argentina, has said he fears for the jobs of his 20 employees and for the livelihoods of the many local artisan leathergoods and footwear manufacturers that relied on the leather his company produced.

Police raided the tannery, run by Cueros del Litoral, on February 12 saying they had a judicial order to clear the building and confiscate all machinery and raw materials. An altercation with some of the workers followed and ten people, including Marcos Isnardi, one of the tannery’s owners, were arrested.

Mr Isnardi told local media that he and his men had doubts about the judicial order because he had been given no notice of it whatsoever.

Cueros del Litoral has been in dispute with a company called La Brava, which owns the land the tannery is operating on, for some time. A previous attempt, in September 2013, to clear the building failed after tannery workers barricaded themselves in.

“The jobs of 20 people are at stake here,” Mr Isnardi said, “plus the jobs of a whole chain of leathergoods and footwear artisans who are our customers.”
