€57,500 for pope’s leather jacket

A Harley-Davidson motorbike and leather sold at auction for almost 20 times its estimated value because its previous owner was the pope.

The Harley-Davidson jacket, a signed by the pope, was sold for EUR 57,500, while a Dyna Super Glide bike sold for EUR 241,500.

They were given to the head of the Catholic Church by the US company to mark its 110th anniversary – but Pope Francis donated them to the charity Caritas, which will use the proceeds to renovate a hostel in Rome.

"It has to be a world record for a 21st century Harley-Davidson and certainly for a Harley-Davidson leather jacket," said Ben Walker, head of motorcycles at auction house Bonhams.
