Double-face dilemma for Turkish tanners

06/02/2014
Turkish producers of double-face sheep and lambskin have complained of a difficult year in 2013 owing to high raw material costs.

While complaining that UK and Spanish sheep and lambskins were expensive in general, they have also pointed out that competition from China helped to keep prices high, with Spanish raw merino skins costing between EUR 20 and EUR 25 each, for example.

During the winter months double-face productions slow down or stop owing to the seasonal lack of raw material in the build-up to the new lambing season.

It will be March or April before the new season gets under way and a new pricing regime emerges, but Turkish tanners have already said they are hopeful of more affordable price levels.
