Record slaughter levels for Paraguay in 2013

29/01/2014
The cattle industry in Paraguay recorded a record figure in its slaughter statistics for 2013, with more than 1.5 million head reaching abattoirs.

This figure represents an increase of 31.7% compared to 2012 and of 48.4% compared to 2011. The statistics for those two years were affected by foot and mouth disease (FMD); Paraguay reported two outbreaks of FMD, one in late 2011 and the second in early 2012.

However, the 2013 figures are 5.5% higher than the record levels registered in 2010, suggesting that the industry in the South American country has now recovered. The country’s herd size has reached 14 million head.
