Drum malfunction blamed for Tuscan tannery fire

Firefighters have blamed a technical problem with a tanning drum for a fire that broke out in mid-January in a tannery in the Santa Croce sull’Arno cluster in Tuscany.

They explained that one of the drums in the Ambassador tannery burst open during overnight processing. Hides spilled out and became caught up in the drum’s mechanism, preventing it from turning correctly. This led to the motor over-heating and the outbreak of the fire.

The fire failed to spread and damage was confined to that one drum. The tannery has been able to continue its production at almost full capacity.
